New medical cannabis guidelines released for Canadian doctors

Following Health Canada’s new regulations, the College of Family Physicians has prepared an updated set of guidelines for prescribing medical cannabis.

There are currently 30,000 medical cannabis patients in Canada and the new report helps doctors better understand when and how much medicine to prescribe.

Health Canada issued new regulations for medical cannabis in April, 2014, that put Canada’s physicians directly in control of writing prescriptions and following up with patients. These changes have given doctors more responsibility, but little new information.

The College of Family Physicians acknowledges that there is a growing need for evidence-based treatment guidelines as more Canadians look toward medical marijuana to manage symptoms of chronic disease and pain.

The report’s recommendations are based on studies and data the College of Family Physicians has access to today. Following the release of this report, they are asking for professional feedback to continue updating the guidelines with new evidence.
